Jewelry (*** jewelry is set with sterling silver ***) The larimar, amber, and conch shell comes from the Dominican Republic and is handmade in the workshops of in Santo Domingo and Santiago. The jewelry is set in sterling silver unless otherwise indicated. Larimar is a blue variety of the mineral pectolite. The sole mine in the world is located in the southwestern part of the Dominican Republic. Miguel Mendez named LARIMAR for the blue color of the sea (MAR) and for his daughter Larissa. To be a miner is a hard, difficult and dangerous living. The mining of larimar and amber is all done by hand. The tunnels from which the amber and larimar is extracted are hot, dark, and stuffy. I bring with me when I visit the Dominican Republic other fossil and mineral materials which are cut and set for me while there. The types of stones will varies but include petrified wood, fossil coral, fossil shell, dinosaur bone, lapis lazuli, mookaite, obsidian, and other stones.
